WooCommerce Checkout Troubleshooting: Find the Failing Layer

When a WooCommerce checkout fails, changing several plugins at once makes the cause harder to identify. Work from the browser request toward the server and payment provider in a repeatable sequence.

Record the exact symptom: a spinner that never ends, a validation message, a failed payment, or an order that exists despite an error. Check WooCommerce logs and PHP error logs for the same timestamp. In the browser Network panel, inspect the checkout request and response without sharing customer payment data or session tokens.

Test with a staging copy and a minimal plugin set where possible. Temporarily switch to a standard theme only in staging, then re-enable components one at a time. Confirm that shipping zones, tax rules, required fields, currency, and payment credentials match the intended environment.

A payment provider may report an authorization failure even when the website is healthy. Conversely, a callback or webhook can fail after the customer returns to the site. Verify order notes, provider dashboard events, webhook signatures, and idempotent callback handling before retrying charges.

Separate the customer-facing redirect from the server-side payment notification. They are different paths and can fail independently.

Please avoid asking customers to retry a payment until you have checked whether the provider already authorized it. Duplicate charges are worse than a delayed confirmation.
