Using Generative AI for Research Without Trusting Every Answer
Generative AI can speed up research, drafting, and summarization, but a fluent answer is not proof that a claim is correct. The safest workflow separates idea generation from verification.
Start with a narrow task and specify the desired format, audience, and constraints. Ask the tool to distinguish facts, assumptions, and uncertainties. For important claims, request source references and independently open those sources; a citation that looks plausible may still be irrelevant or nonexistent.
Do not paste confidential client data, credentials, private records, or unreleased business information into a tool unless the organization has approved that service and its data handling. Treat generated code as untrusted input: review dependencies, security implications, edge cases, and licensing before use.
Create a repeatable review checklist for outputs that affect money, legal obligations, health, security, or public communication. AI is most useful when it reduces repetitive work while leaving accountability and final judgment with a human reviewer.

For factual research, ask for the source passage or exact document section that supports each key claim, then verify it yourself.

We also avoid entering client secrets into public AI tools. A good workflow includes a clear rule for what data is permitted in each service.
