Technical SEO Checks Before Publishing a New Website
Technical SEO starts with making important pages discoverable, indexable, and understandable. A site can have strong writing and still struggle if canonical URLs, redirects, or crawl controls are inconsistent.
Choose the preferred hostname and HTTPS version, then redirect alternate versions consistently. Give each important page a descriptive title and useful meta description. Canonical URLs should point to the preferred version of the page, not to an unrelated homepage. Avoid generating multiple indexable URLs for the same content without a clear reason.
Check robots directives, XML sitemaps, internal links, response codes, and mobile rendering. A robots.txt disallow rule does not guarantee a URL will never appear in search results; use the appropriate indexing controls for the situation. Ensure important content is present in the rendered page and not hidden behind a broken client-side process.
After launch, verify the domain in search tools, submit the sitemap, and monitor indexing and crawl errors. Structured data should accurately describe visible page content. SEO is not a one-time checklist, but these basics prevent avoidable technical barriers.

Check canonical tags on both listing pages and individual articles. A shared partial can accidentally make every article canonicalize to the homepage.

After launch, inspect a sample of real URLs in search tools and review server logs for repeated 404s or redirect chains.
