Preventing SQL Injection in Laravel Applications

SQL injection occurs when untrusted input changes the structure of a database query. Laravel's query builder and Eloquent use parameter binding for ordinary value comparisons, but unsafe raw SQL can reintroduce the risk.

Prefer where clauses with bound values and avoid concatenating request input into SQL strings. If a query needs a dynamic column name or sort direction, use a strict allowlist because identifiers generally cannot be treated like ordinary bound values. Validate data according to business rules, but remember that validation alone is not a replacement for parameterized queries.

Review raw expressions, report builders, search filters, and admin tools carefully. Least-privilege database credentials limit the damage if a vulnerability is found. Avoid returning raw database errors to users because those messages can reveal schema details.

Test with unexpected input and review code paths that construct queries dynamically. Security checks should cover both normal routes and privileged administrative actions. The safest pattern is to keep query structure under application control and pass user values separately.

Sorting by a user-selected column needs an allowlist of known column names. Binding cannot safely turn arbitrary user text into an identifier.

Search for DB::raw and string-built SQL during reviews; these are useful places to inspect, although their presence alone does not prove a vulnerability.
