Choosing Between a VPS and Managed Cloud Hosting
A VPS and a managed cloud service can both host production applications, but they place different responsibilities on the customer. The right choice depends on operational skill, workload, availability needs, and the cost of downtime.
A VPS offers control over the operating system, packages, and network configuration. That flexibility also means someone must manage security updates, monitoring, backups, capacity, and recovery. Managed hosting may take responsibility for some of those tasks, but the boundaries vary by provider and plan.
Compare the complete operating cost rather than the advertised monthly price. Include backup storage, bandwidth, monitoring, support, licenses, migration effort, and staff time. Review CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network limits, plus the provider's recovery and support commitments.
For a small team without an on-call administrator, a well-defined managed service may reduce operational risk. For a team that needs custom services and has the skills to operate them, a VPS can be appropriate. In either case, test restore procedures and establish monitoring before moving critical workloads.

Ask who patches the operating system and who responds outside business hours. Those two questions often expose the real difference between plans.

Whichever option you choose, make sure backups can be restored to a replacement environment and not just downloaded from a dashboard.
