Analytics Events: Measure Actions That Support Decisions
Analytics is useful when each event corresponds to a question the business needs to answer. Tracking every click without a measurement plan often creates noise rather than insight.
Define the conversion and the steps that lead to it before adding events. For an ecommerce site, that may include product view, add to cart, checkout start, payment result, and purchase. Use consistent event names and parameters, and document what each event means so reports remain understandable over time.
Avoid sending passwords, payment details, email addresses, or other unnecessary personal information to analytics tools. Check consent requirements and configure retention and access appropriately. Ensure purchase events are not fired repeatedly on page refresh and reconcile analytics totals with the system of record.
Review event quality after deployment using test sessions and debug tools. Compare conversion trends across useful segments, but be cautious about inferring causation from correlation. Analytics should guide experiments and operational improvements, not replace customer research or reliable transaction records.

Treat the order database or payment ledger as the financial source of truth. Analytics can miss events because of blockers, consent, or network failures.

Document event parameters and version changes. Otherwise a dashboard may combine values that look alike but mean different things.
